On this episode of Glimpse, we talk about Ferrari’s latest creation the SF90 Stradale. The “SF90” in its name is a reference to the 90th anniversary of the Ferrari race team while “Stradale” is Italian for “road”.
The SF90 Stradale is the most powerful street legal car ever and it turns out also to be a a plug in hybrid electric vehicle. This vehicle is the first ever Ferrari to feature a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) architecture which sees the internal combustion engine integrated with three electric motors, two of which are independent and located on the front axle, with the third at the rear between the engine and the gearbox. The impressive car is powered by a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine that generates 769 horsepower and gets an additional 217 horsepower from its three electric motors.
Ferrari admitted that the plug-in hybrid powertrain added 595 pounds over a conventional internal-combustion powertrain, but the automaker said extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber helped counteract that, bringing the final weight to 3,461 pounds — slightly less than the LaFerrari. With more power and less weight, it’s not surprising that the SF90 Stradale was able to lap Ferrari’s Fiorano test track a full second faster than the LaFerrari.
